Mid Island Health Alliance Recruitment and Retention Committee
Attracting, Welcoming, and Retaining Healthcare Providers
The Mid Island Health Alliance (MIHA) Recruitment and Retention Committee is a collaborative, community-based group focused on attracting, welcoming, and retaining physicians and nurse practitioners in the Mid Island region.
Weaving the provider into the fabric of the community is the key to retention.
The committee brings together municipal leaders, health system partners, business and tourism organizations, and passionate community members to support healthcare providers not just professionally, but personally and socially as they consider living and practising in our communities.

Strengthening the Full Recruitment Cycle
Moving forward, the committee will focus on practical, high-impact initiatives that strengthen the full recruitment cycle — from first site visit to long-term retention.

Priority Programs Include:
-
Developing an inventory of short- and medium-term housing options for locums, visiting specialists, and new practitioners
-
Hosting physician and nurse practitioner appreciation events
-
Creating welcoming social connections such as resident pub lunches and mayor-hosted welcome dinners
-
Offering community-based perks and discounts through local businesses
Supporting Onboarding and Community Integration
The committee will also support the development of promotional and onboarding tools, including community videos, informational “cheat sheets,” and coordinated communications to highlight the lifestyle, professional opportunities, and strong community support available in the Mid Island area.

Together, these initiatives aim to ensure that healthcare providers feel valued, supported, and connected — key factors in building a stable and sustainable primary care workforce for our region.
